Historical Advances in Producing Electricity from the Sun

To know the present day usage of solar energy, we first must understand historical advances in producing electricity from the sun.  When political figure start speaking about new and renewable energy, you know we have difficulties. Solar energy is a substantial renewable energy and here is a synopsis of how the technology has developed.

Historical Advances in Producing Electricity from the Sun

Solar electricity is simply energy produced by harnessing the sun. It comes in many forms including electricity production through panels, home heating through passive systems and mobile packets for powering devices like laptops and RVs to mention only a few platforms.

Historically, sunlight has been used by mankind to produce heat ever since we first built structures. Without electricity, mankind soon learned to orient structures to capture the heat of the sun during the day and store it in ceramic or mud materials much like a blacktop parking lot will radiate heat after the sun has gone down. Early Greek structures show a particular use of this solar strategy as do Egyptian structures.

The production of electricity using sunlight is a much more recent phenomenon. In 1901, Nicolas Tesla was the first person to receive a patent related to solar electricity, but he called it radiant heating. He sought a patent for a machine to capture the radiant heat, but nothing much came of the invention. It could not become milestone for Historical Advances in Producing Electricity from the Sun.

In 1904, some unknown physicist named Albert Einstein published a paper on the potential electricity production from sunlight. In 1913, William Coblentz received the first patent for a solar cell, but he could never make it work. In 1916, Robert Millikan was the first to produce electricity with the cell. For the next forty years or so, nobody made much progress because the cells were highly inefficient at converting sunlight to energy.

In the 1950s, Bell Labs got involved with NASA. Bell was charged with coming up with a solar platform to power spacecraft once they were in orbit. The solar industry would never be the same.

Gerald L. Pearson, Daryl M. Chapin, and Calvin S. Fuller started researching different areas related to solar, but not active parts of the NASA project. By luck, they meet and exchanged ideas. While their individual projects were failures, their combined efforts produce a much more efficient cell using crystallized silicon to convert sunlight into electricity. The efficiency rate of the cells was roughly 6 percent, a marked improvement over previous technology. In 1958, NASA launched the Vanguard Spacecraft, which was powered by solar panels. This was the first major achievement which changed the Historical Advances in Producing Electricity from the Sun.

In the following years, solar technology grew in leaps and bounds. Solar panels today are roughly 15 percent efficient, but also much smaller than they use to be. More importantly, companies are abandoning the panel platform and coming out with amazing new products. The first are shingles that look exactly like regular roof shingles and perform as such.

Nanotechnology is also offering amazing possibilities with quantum dots, which are essentially solar panels on the quantum level. Eventually, these dots will be incorporated in things such as paint. Yes, the paint on the walls of buildings and homes will eventually also produce all the electricity needed for the structures. Today we are not looking back to see what has changed in Historical Advances in Producing Electricity from the Sun but are looking forward for the new inventions every day.

Man has used the power of the sun for heat for a very long time. Only now, however, are we starting to master the technology to turn it into large amounts of free electricity.

Will Solar Panels Save You Money

When we talk about the upfront cost estimates of solar panels, users are apprehensive and always concerned about “Will solar panels save you money”. Homeowners, residential users, commercial and industries owners who are contemplating to install grid connected rooftop solar power plants at their premises / dwellings are perhaps concerned about the environmental issues, but also huge upfront cost involved in solar panels installation. Even after taking into account the upfront cost estimates, input tax credits, state solar subsidies, rebates, incentives etc., many people are still found to be apprehensive  about the solar panels installation cost and always found ponder upon main issue i.e. “Will solar panels save you money”

Yes: Investment in Solar Photo-voltaic Modules or Solar PV Panels is worth vis-à-vis today’s electric prices.

Residential Solar panels contain solar cells, known as photo-voltaic cells, connected in series or parallel so that highest efficiency of the solar panel is achieved and the solar panels require the maximum solar energy, full sunlight as long as possible without being obstructed from trees or shade lines from the roof.

Solar Photo-voltaic is primarily used for grid connected electricity to operate residential appliances, commercial equipment, lighting and air-conditioning for all type of buildings.  Through standalone systems and use of batteries, it is also well suited for remote regions where there is no electricity or very limited. Solar PV modules can be ground mounted or installed on a rooftop of a building.

First apprehension about how and where to arrange huge upfront cost / investment

Solar Loan by Public Sector Undertaking / Nationalised Banks

Now-a-days all Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) / nationalized banks like IDBI, State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India etc. are offering solar loans and renowned solar companies are facilitating easy access to such loans.  Hence the first fear of huge upfront investment is almost omitted by the fact that 70% of the total cost of solar power plant installation may be financed by the banks.

Nationalized / PSUs banks are very keen in supporting the Government’s initiative for providing of renewable clean source of energy through the installation of rooftop solar PV plants, solar lighting system and solar water heating system. While we still contemplate Will Solar Panels Save You Money, the very first concern about arrangements of upfront cost is deviated by provision of solar loans.

Government of India’s Direction for Solar Loans to the Needy

Government of India, Ministry of Finance has advised all PSUs / Nationalized banks to encourage the home loan / home improvement loan for installation of rooftop solar PVs and include the cost of such equipment in their housing loan. All PSUs / Nationalized banks have instructed their branches / offices to take not of these directions and extend loan for installation of rooftop solar PVs as part of housing loans and house repair / renovation loans. Provision of solar loan makes solar panels installation easy to eliminate any apprehension about “Will Solar Panels Save You Money”.

Interest Rate of Solar Loan Equivalent to Home Loan

Interest rate on loan for installation of grid connected rooftop solar power plants is equivalent to home loan.  With increasing awareness to adopt clean green renewable energy and the rising cost of grid supplied electricity, rooftop solar plants are finding more and more takers in the residential, institutional, social and commercial sector.

Installation of Solar Panels identified as Priority Sector Lending

Taking this into account the Government of India via Reserve Bank of India, has directed for financing of solar plants while identifying it as Priority Sector by all Public Sector Banks (PSUs), specifically targeting the needs of individual domestic users, housing development societies, small and medium commercial entrepreneurs.  The solar loan may be clubbed with home loan either existing or a new one.

Solar loans can be considered as part of home loans

Solar loans can be considered as part of home loans. All PSUs and nationalized banks may allow cost of grid connected rooftop solar power plants as part of house constructions price. If a user already has previous / existing home loan, then cost of installation of solar power plant may be considered as home improvement loan.

Second apprehension about DISCOM’S electricity rates vis-à-vis price of utility generated through Solar

Cost of One Unit of Electricity provided by Power Distribution Companies (DISCOM)

Presently, all most all DISCOM Utility companies in India charge Rupees 3 to 6 per unit for domestic users while levying other extra charge like electricity duty etc. whereas  it is Rupees 6 to 7 per unit for commercial users. Price of electricity generated by coal or oil is very much linked to current market prices and inflation hence very much liable for increase every year.  [News Flash] Government of India is likely to increase electricity price by Rupees 3.75 per unit to combat the power tariff.

Cost of One Units of Electricity generated by Solar Panels

On the other hand, solar power plant once installed is guaranteed to generate electricity consistently and coherently at least for 25 years or beyond.  Presently cost of generation by solar power plant is somewhere Rupees 2 to 4 per unit considering its yielding for a longer period.

And this omits both the critical factor which are apprehensive in adopting of clean green renewable energy i.e. electricity by solar photovoltaic PV Panels.

Return of Investment on Installation of Solar Panels in India

Because whole cost of installation is paid up-front and the benefits flow in over 25 to 30 years, it is important to account for the fact that a Rupees saved today is not worth as much as a Rupees saved tomorrow. The value of money is slated to be receded and degraded day by day. The best way to factor in the timing of costs and benefits is to calculate a “leveled” cost per kilowatt-hour. Thus, a typical Rupees 215000 system (after 30% Central / state government’s rebates / subsidies, incentives and input tax credit) is worth to save Rupees 4000 per month for next 25 years. We can summarize that such system would return Rs.48000 every year and a total of Rupees 12 Lakhs in next 25 years.  The return of investment is quite impressive and worth to adopt solar power plant installation at your house, premises, dwellings, shopping malls, institutions or industries etc.

Are home solar panels worth the cost?

At these rates, the sector of residential consumers could indeed save money, because the solar power would replace electricity from the utility that costs them Rs.6 to 8 per unit.  Smaller users, however, would be replacing power that only costs them 4 to 6 Rupees per unit. Probably about 80 % of urban and Semi-Urban domestic customers, the very heaviest users, would save money by installing solar panels (though they would likely save more money by improving the energy efficiency of their dwellings). The other 20% percent would also get benefit financially at current electricity rates if they consider inflation and increased rates of DISCOM’s electricity.

Prices of DISCOM’s electricity slated to rise

The prices of electricity are going to change over time despite all the facts considered in this article. The average price may increase if the price of natural gas, oil, coal, uranium rises quicker than inflation or a greater share of the power comes from more-expensive alternative-energy sources. But alternative energy – wind power, hydro power, geothermal and even solar energy is going to get cheaper as technology advances. In addition, that sharp rate structure is likely to be more pricey, considerably increasing the electricity rates that the largest users now face.  The savings from solar panels that those households would enjoy under current rates is going to shine in near future.

Solar energy makes an environmental statement

Installing solar PV reduces the danger of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.  New and renewable energy i.e. solar energy makes an environmental statement, and most of the people love the blue panels look on their rooftop pretty cool. There are many other reasons to buy solar panels, but if you are looking for big savings on electricity, you are very likely to be delighted with this new-found technology for the people.

Third Apprehension: How Solar Panels Save Me Money

1 kW Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Power Plant is guaranteed to generate 4-5 units per day for next 25 years consistently thus saving at least Rupees One Thousand a month.  Solar Panels are capable to cut your electric bill up to 90% in ideal sunlight conditions.

Fourth Apprehension: If Solar Panels work in night?

Name of solar panels itself suggest that it generates electricity from the sunlight.  Hence a grid connected rooftop solar power plant installed at your house / premises is capable to generate electricity during day time itself equal to your 24 hours load’s requirement.  During day time your load runs on solar generated electricity and excess if any is fed in to the grid by the help of bid-directional net meter.  Extra electricity fed in to the grid during day time would reverse during night through the same net meter, hence your consumption of grid’s electricity remains almost zero despite this fact that solar panels do not work in night.

Fifth Apprehension: If Solar Panels still worthy despite upfront cost

Yes, answer is affirmative.  Solar revolution is aided and supported by Government of India in the form of Solar Subsidies, rebates ranging from 30 to 70% as per your demographic residential status.  State Governments provides solar generation incentive by compensating through monthly electrical bills. Most of the state Governments in India provides solar generation incentives ranging from Rupees 1 to 2 per unit generated by solar.  Other than this, any extra non-consumed units fed in to the grid though net meter get accumulated which should be used within one financial year (between 01 April to 31 March to avoid lapse of accumulated units). Top of this, Delhi Government would buy un-expended units for Rupees 2 per unit after lapse of two financial years.

A Ready Reckoner to assess “Will Solar Panels Save You Money”

Despite all apprehensions, I can say that it is wise and worth to go for solar despite upfront costs while considering long-term benefits as well as environment issues.  Out main question “Will Solar panels save your money” remains the core of debate and may be understood by referring a ready reckoner table depicting return of investment on Solar for Domestic Users.  The rates and other statistics shown in this table have been based as per the current market scenario and liable to change.

What is difference between on-grid and off-grid solar system

Before we get into depth about “what is difference between on-grid and off-grid solar system”, we must first understand how does Solar panels work?

How does Solar Panels Work?

Solar Panels, solar modules or solar photo-voltaic PV modules actually work by absorbing sunlight with photo-voltaic cells, generating direct current (DC) electricity and then converting it to usable alternating current (AC) electricity with the help of smart solar inverter technology. AC energy or electricity then flows through the home’s electrical panel via Array Junction Box (AJB) and Distribution Junction Box (DJB) for further distribution to the load accordingly.

Solar energy or solar power is perhaps the cleanest, most reliable form of renewable energy available to the mankind, and it can be used in several forms to help power your home or business. Solar-powered photo-voltaic (PV) panels convert the sunlight into electricity by stimulating electrons in silicon cells using the photons of light from the sun.

What is the difference between On-grid and off-grid solar power

Now it is easier to understand “What is the difference between On-grid and off-grid solar power?” On-grid solar power means your solar power plant or solar panels system is tied to your local utility company’s system which is called as “grid” or “mains electricity”. Each and every state in India has its own Electricity Distribution Corporations / Companies like state of Haryana has Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (UHBVN) and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN). Most of the residence / Institutional / NGOs / NPOs / Industries use Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Power Plant System so that their load runs on solar throughout day time while extra units / electricity produced by the system is fed in the grid through Bi-Directional Net Meter. Extra Units or electricity fed in the day time can be utilized by the user during night through Bi-Directional Net Meter. This system is helpful to curtail your electricity bills up to 90% for almost 25 years. Let us understand this by a simple example of 5 kWp Grid Connected solar power plant installed at a User’s rooftop is expected to produce 4-5 units per kilowatt per day. Thus a 5 kWp solar plant will produce at least 20 units per day. So in this example, user’s consumption may be 10 units during day time and similar amount of units at night. So, after providing 10 units to the user’s load, remaining 10 units are fed in the Grid during day time and same is received back during night time. At the end, we can summarize that user had produced his own 20 units by the solar system and utilized his whole 20 units (10 during and 10 at night) by the help of On-Grid Inverter and Bidirectional Net Meter. We may note here, that On-Grid system requires availability of Mains electricity to enable feeding in excess units in the Grid. In case of Grid failure, On-Grid solar power plant would also stop working due to International Safety and Security measures for Grid workforce. So we can say, on-grid solar power plant is installed in such areas where grid availability is almost 24 hours to enable excess generation to be fed in the grid.

On-Grid v/s Off-Grid

Now we can define that On-Grid Systems are solar pv systems that only generate power when the utility power grid is available. They must connect to the grid to function. They can send excess power generated back to the grid when you are overproducing so you credit it for later use. On-Grid solar system can be installed in most of the Metropolitan Cities, Urban and Sub-Urban cities of India where grid availability is almost 24 hours.

Grid tied Solar PV systems consist of solar panels, Solar String inverter. These systems do not utilize batteries since Grid is used as storage of excess electricity produced by the system. The solar panels generate electricity from sunlight and feed it to the solar string inverter which converts the DC voltage coming from the solar panels directly into AC power to match the grid.

When daylight sun-rays fall on solar panels they produce Direct Current (DC) electricity which is converted into 240 V AC power by solar string inverters to power up your load, excess power, if any is fed in the grid by help of two-way energy meter (bidirectional net meter). Some electricity companies will meter the electricity fed into the grid by your solar power plant system and provide a credit on your bill in the form of Solar Generation Incentives. Accumulated credited units can be consumed by the user within one financial year to avoid lapse.

A grid-connected photo-voltaic power system or grid-connected PV power system is electricity generating solar PV power system that is connected to the utility grid. A grid-connected PV system consists of solar panels, String Solar inverters, and grid Bidirectional Net Meters for connection with the Grid or main electricity.

On the other hand, off- grid solar power plant system is a system designed to help people’s own electrical system function without the support of remote infrastructure, such as an electrical grid. In electricity, off-grid solar power plant system can work as stand-alone power system or mini-grid typically to provide a electricity to users or smaller community who either do not have access or have very limited access to the main grid with electricity like most of the rural areas in India.

Off-grid solar power plant systems can refer to living in a self-sufficient manner without relying upon local electricity distribution companies DISCOM Utility. Off-grid rooftop solar power plants are autonomous; they do not rely on electrical power grid, or similar utility services.

On-grid inverters collect DC power from solar panels, convert it into AC, and send it into the load as well as into grid for credit / later use. On-Grid solar power plants are simple and easier to install since there are only two main components i.e. string inverter and solar panels. On the other hand an off-grid inverter needs a battery bank to function.

Off-Grid solar power plant is sufficient to power your house with a solar energy system. House hold appliances and lights that use AC (alternating current) electricity will require an inverter to do the job conversion from DC to AC.

Advantages and Disadvantages Involving Renewable Energy Sources

While we discuss about Advantages and Disadvantages Involving Renewable Energy Sources, I can count on numerous Advantages versus Disadvantages. There are many aspects in favor and against renewable energy sources. Well before we ponder upon the main issue, it can be very significant that you not only know the broad topic of subject matter but also fully grasp these advantages and disadvantages involving renewable energy sources. This piece of information is meant to let you learn know-how about some of the major positives and negatives of solar energy panels, windmills energy and magnetic energy generating devices. It will be essential for you to distinguish these, so that you can be able to make the most effective selection yourself.

Advantages: Reasons In Support Of Advantages Involving Renewable Energy Sources

In our effort to learn Advantages and Disadvantages Involving Renewable Energy Sources, we would first contemplate reasons in favor of making use of renewable power:-

a) Advantages Involving Free Renewable Energy Sources.  The renewable energy sources are almost available free, or nearly free in abundance bestowed by our mother nature (depending on which device does one use). When you have sufficient funds or enough money to invest in to renewable energy devices, you’re saving money every single day. One time upfront cost or investment in to renewable energy pays consistently and coherently for next 25 years at least in the form of savings on electrical bills. Costs of electricity gained from oil and coal by means of fossil fuel will be constantly increasing every year as per global changing scenarios – so this factor will be a lot more important in favor to consider use of renewable sources.

b) Self Reliance in generation of own electricity.  An extra thing is that you may become self-reliant to generate your own electricity and completely independent from so-called electric power consortium or power kings, which is currently being controlled by the global energy market. All the natural resources available to the world have been captured by these so called power companies in the form of oil, coal, uranium and electricity. Only renewable energy sources are available freely to the mankind on the earth in the form of solar, wind and hydro energy. You only need right equipment to convert renewable energy sources in the unending electrical supply. One other good cause for using or switching into renewable energy devices is freedom from utility Grid who keeps on charging you every month in the form of electricity bills and invoices.

c) Who do not want to be eco-friendly? Everyone on the earth is highly concerned about the global warming and environmental issues. So everyone is looking to adopt clean, green and renewable energy to avoid use of fossil fuels. After that there is something bigger – we don’t wish to use power generating devices that pollute our air and environment. That is really crucial to make our mother Earth a better place to live on for us and our future generations. Once you take this aspect of environment into consideration, then it seems very sensible to use “free and renewable energy sources” technology available to mankind.
d) Solar Subsidy an Advantage involving sue of renewable energy sources.  Government of India (MNRE) in its clear move to achieve 100 GW by 2022, has decided to extend solar subsidies through Jawahar Lal Nehru Solar Mission via State Nodal Agencies and District Authorities to the tunes of Rupees 20,000 per kilowatt or 30% of the benchmark cost whichever is less. Residential, Institutional and NGO / NPO sector is eligible for solar subsidy. Commercial ventures are also benefitted by 40% Accelerated Deduction of Tax (ADT) other than Net Metering Facilities to reduce their electrical bills up to 90% for next 25 years by installing Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Power Plants at their premises.
The points enumerated show the positive aspects of renewable energy sources. There is also a negative aspect of this issue. Here’s a discussion of some of the negatives and against the use of renewable energy sources.

Disadvantages: Reasons In Favor Of Disadvantages Involving Renewable Energy Sources

a) The problem of access through GRID – Our DISCOM power distribution companies are not much enthusiast towards this new found technology. DISCOM’s staff is also not technologically sound to accept and work on renewable energy sources and its devices. If you ever use some renewable energy sources device that might produce the effect of small access problems created by the Power Companies. So called “renewable energy sources device / machines” aren’t being accepted heartily or supported by our current electricity distribution companies. There is no way that this could be a good thing. DISCOM’s SDO (Operations) act as nodal agency for implementation of Net metering for use of renewable energy sources. Most of the states allow you to install a Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Power Plant equivalent to your Sanctioned Load (SL) at your premises.

b) Next point is about trained professional of renewable energy sources. If you have some difficulties, or technical problems, you’d probably like to call someone and ask for help. The problem with renewable energy solutions is that there are not many people out there in the country who are truly competent in this field at the moment. These technologies are just still very new to the world. As these technologies will spread among wide common masses, this problem is believed to be tackled in a right manner. Highly skilled and thoroughly professional team of DayRise Solar Enerdy Pvt Ltd may be always ready to help with regard to use and usage of renewable energy sources in and around Sonipat and Delhi NCR.

c) Several of these “renewable energy sources device / machines” have huge upfront cost in the beginning and costs a good deal of money, or usually are not really easy to build them on your own. A final justification to avoid using renewable energy sources is: many of “renewable energy sources device” costs a lot of money in the beginning. That especially pertains to solar panels, solar Inverters, Solar Batteries, Solar Mounting Structures and other balance of system for installation of Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Power Plants. Solar batteries if installed as storage in off-grid solar power plants need recurrent replacement, thus costs heavily on the pocket of user. If you opt to use renewable energy sources / devices like solar batteries, wind energy, hydro energy and others, this may be crucial factor to consider.

Conclusion : Advantages and Disadvantages Involving Renewable Energy Sources

So there you have it. We have seen and examined all the aspects related to the advantages and disadvantages of making use of renewable energy sources. It is going to be next new-to-be-adopted universal phenomena, available for everybody; nonetheless it will surely appeal to a great many people all over world. You will want to look at the information presented to make your decision, for or against.
